Research from the NSW Koala Research Plan now available

Research and data from the NSW Koala Research Plan (the plan) is now available on the new Koala Hub on the SEED portal. The SEED Koala Hub makes the latest science and data from the NSW Koala Strategy available to everyone, in one central location.

The NSW Koala Research Plan is a 10-year plan that identifies and prioritises critical knowledge gaps in our understanding of koalas. Since its release in 2019, 29 research projects have been funded under the plan. The plan is reviewed regularly and every two years researchers and stakeholders meet at a Koala Research Symposium to hear progress and confirm priorities. The 2025 symposium was held on 8-9 September.

Research covered in the SEED Koala Hub includes:

  1. Aboriginal-led koala research – 2 projects funded
Integrating Traditional Ecological Knowledge, supporting First Nations partnerships, and promoting culturally appropriate research, monitoring and conservation.
  2. Koala habitat protection and restoration – 11 projects funded
Explores a range of topics including habitat quality, food availability, landscape connectivity, private land management, key refugia, habitat loss, climate change, and urban development, using both ecological and cross-disciplinary approaches.
  3. Effects of fire on koalas – 2 projects funded
Assessing immediate and long-term impacts of fire on koala populations and developing fire mitigation strategies.
  4. Impact of dieback – 2 projects funded
Mapping prevalence, assessing severity compared to other stressors, and identifying management and knowledge gaps.
  5. Koala disease – 8 projects funded
Analysing the effectiveness of chlamydia management, drivers of prevalence and habitat-disease resilience thresholds.
  6. Vehicle strike mitigation – 1 project funded
Investigating fencing, signage, and koala grid effectiveness to support safe movement.
  7. Land management practices – 6 projects funded
Identifying effective land use and environmental strategies to enhance habitat quality and conservation outcomes.
  8. Koala translocation– 2 projects funded
Informing best practices by investigating genetic management of threatened koala populations and reviewing current relocation methods.

The Koala Hub on SEED provides easy access to data, reports and project outcomes, ensuring the best available science and knowledge informs koala conservation across New South Wales. Let us know what you think or ask questions in the Koala Hub Forum.
