About
Supporting koala conservation with better data
The Koala Data Hub is a new online resource developed under the NSW Koala Strategy to improve access to spatial data that supports koala conservation across New South Wales. It replaces the existing koala habitat information base (KHIB) and expands its scope with updated and new datasets.
The Koala Data Hub directly supports action 4.4 of the NSW Koala Strategy, which focuses on building knowledge through mapping, monitoring, and data. It also supports a wide range of koala related projects and programs, by providing a centralised and accessible platform. The Hub complements BioNet's systematic and standardised data approach by providing a flexible space for bespoke and program-specific datasets.
These resources help:
- Government agencies prioritise conservation areas and assess development impacts.
- Local councils create koala habitat maps and guide planning decisions.
- Landholders and community groups engage in habitat restoration and protection.
- Researchers monitor trends in koala distribution, genetics, and health.
What's on the Koala Data Hub?
The hub is aligned with the four pillars of the NSW Koala Strategy and provides access to the relevant datasets. These include:
- Koala sightings and surveys
- Habitat mapping and modelling
- Population monitoring
- Threat mitigation and management
- Community engagement
- Traditional ecological knowledge
The release of content will be staged, allowing users to access new datasets and reports as they become available. For more information about the release of data, visit Our Data Roadmap.
